ST IVES have made their ninth signing of the summer by capturing versatile Redruth back Tim McBride.

Hakes' new head coach Ian Morgan had thought he had completed his squad for the new season, but he is delighted to have now added the Truro-born 23-year-old.

"I am really pleased about Tim's decision because he is a quality player who can play anywhere in the back three and is also very comfortable at 13 if required," said Morgan.

"Tim has played several games for Redruth's first XV over the last couple of years and his experience at that level will be a real bonus for us.

"He has already settled into the squad very quickly. Tim and the rest of the squad have worked extremely hard this week and he seems to be really enjoying himself."

Meanwhile, international rugby returns further up the north Cornish coast this weekend with the second staging of the Newquay Surf Sevens.

More than 1,500 players and supporters will arrive in the Cornish resort as some top seven-a-side teams compete for more than £10,000 in prize money at Newquay Sports Centre over two days.

Saturday will see the main Invitational Rugby Sevens Festival taking place, featuring internationally renowned teams including KooGa Wailers, Samurai International, Plymouth Albion, Marauders, the British Army and the Westcountry Cavaliers. The action will start at 10am, with the final expected to be played at approximately 7pm.

Defending champions the Army are set to once again include a team of brilliant Fijians, while the Wailers are expected to name a host of players from Guinness Premiership side Newcastle Falcons, who will use the tournament as a warm-up for the Middlesex Sevens later this summer.

Separate competitions for the Men's Open and Women's Open will also be played on the Saturday. The Men's Open has attracted 24 teams from all over the UK, including Worcester Trojans, Ronin Impact, the RAF Spitfires and the Royal Navy Sharks. The cost on each day is £5 for adults, children under-14 free, and free car parking.
