The retirement of a number of older members of the committee has left the charity struggling to resource all the requests it gets to provide training and first aid cover.
St John Ambulance will arrange a separate fundraising event next year to raise money for the unit and hope another organisation will be able to take on the carnival.

Sue Ayre, Divisional Superintendent for Ilfracombe, said: “The carnival is a massive community event for Ilfracombe and one that we have been proud to have run for so long.
“We are very disappointed to have reached this decision but we can’t put ourselves in a position where we just cannot provide the resources any longer.
“Our first aid commitments at that time of year are substantial. It would cost us money to run this event and we must channel this funding into our priorities of providing first aid cover and training people to save lives.
“We felt that it was right that the community in Ilfracombe are made aware of the decision not to continue in 2013 as soon as possible with the hope that another group or organisation may wish consider arranging the carnival procession in the future.
“We want to thank the many sponsors and supporters that have helped us over the years and hope to continue to be involved in providing first aid cover, should the new organisers want us to.
“We are happy to help anyone who wishes to take over the running of the event and pass on any advice we can.”
Anyone interested in taking over the running of the carnival procession can contact 01271 862584.
