St Mellion's Ruth moves closer to a European Tour place after reaching final qualifying round
James Ruth has won through to the final stage of qualifying for next year's PGA European Tour.
The 27-year-old St Mellion touring professional – born in Plymouth, raised in Tavistock – finished joint fifth in second stage qualifying at Lumine Golf and Beach Club in Tarragona, Spain.
In doing so, Ruth has repeated his efforts of last year and will again compete in the final stage at the PGA Catalunya Resort.
A total of 73 players have earned a chance to bid for a European Tour card in Girona from November 24-29 as they emerged from the 303 taking part in the second stage, which was hosted at four different venues across Spain.

Ruth carded three 69s before a fourth and final round 68 to finish on nine under par 275 with three other players – Spains's Sebastian Garcia Rodriguez, France's Christophe Brazillier and Ireland's Niall Kearney – in Tarragona.
Welsh ace Liam Bond – a pre-tournament favourite – topped the Lumine leaderboard on 17 under par (267), three clear of runner-up Paul Maddy.
Truro's Rhys Enoch – now touring professional at Celtic Manor – was two strokes away from qualifying at Las Colinas Golf and Country Club in Alicante.
Enoch scored 72 and 76 over the opening two rounds but then showed what he is capable of with a third day 68 and final round 66 to finish on two under (282) and joint 30th.
Saunton's Jon White, who won through to El Valle Golf Resort in Murcia, and Teignmouth's Billy Hemstock, playing at Campo de Golf El Saler in Valencia, finished outside the qualifying groups from their respective courses.
Today Ruth is set to play in the 888poker.com Tour Championship over the Marquess course at Woburn. The three-day event teed off yesterday.
