BUSINESSES in Exeter and East Devon are doing their bit to support this year's Comic Relief appeal.

South West Communications Group has set up a new-look call centre for one of its long-standing customers to support their call-handling role during the massive fundraising event.

Axminster Tool Centre will be one of a select group of businesses taking calls from people pledging money to the charity throughout the evening of Red Nose Day on Friday, March 15.

To enable the company to cope with the volume of calls, its telephone systems supplier has given its time free of charge to change its current customer services call centre into one suitable for 60 call handlers to take Red Nose Day pledges. It will then be returned to its normal set-up in time for Saturday morning's business.

South West Communications Group's managing director Harry Langley said: "Axminster Tool Centre have been one of our customers for over 20 years and we have built up a good relationship with them during that time. It is a pleasure to be able to help them with their Red Nose Day efforts and I wish all their call centre staff the very best for what will hopefully be a very busy evening."

As the main sponsor of Exeter Chiefs, South West Communications Group has secured the services of three first-team squad members to assist the call handlers, along with account manager Simon Dunstan. The company has also bought some of the 1,000 cupcakes made by Chiefs players Chris Whitehead, Jack Yeandle and Craig Rimmer and Exeter College catering students.

Meanwhile, Kiss the Cook, based at Longdown, near Exeter, are raising funds by selling specially designed aprons and tea towels embroidered with the Red Nose Day logo.

Staff at Aspect Windows is inviting nearby businesses to a bake sale at their Exeter showroom in Apple Lane. The company has joined East Devon-based property guru Kirstie Allsopp in the Twitter Million campaign, a challenge on the social networking site to raise £1m for the charity.

Managing director Steve Cooling said: "We joined Kirstie's Twitter team because of her connections with Devon. We're hoping that the whole of Trade City gets behind us and helps us to do our bit for the campaign."
