STREET lighting hours will be altered to tie in with the darker mornings, Devon County Council has said.

Concerns had been raised by some North Devon residents that those who get up early for work would be faced with dark lanes following the introduction of part-night lighting in some residential areas.

But the authority said the timing of the lights would be altered by one hour to coincide with the end of British summer time.

More than 40 towns and villages in North Devon have been converted to part-night lighting over the past two years meaning street lights in some residential areas are only on between dusk and 12.30am and again from 5.30am until dawn.

The county council said 28,000 lights have been converted across Devon, which has led to a drop in electrical consumption of 3,000,000 kilowatts from just over 37,000,000 kilowatts in 2010/11 to an estimated 34,000,000 kilowatts at the end of 2011/12.

This equates to a saving of £315,000 per year at current energy costs and a reduction in carbon emissions of around 1,600 tonnes.

The council said the street lighting carbon reduction programme was on target to deliver annual savings of 4,000 tonnes of carbon a year.
