Super Jamie Cureton thrilled with Exeter City's win over Bradford

Exeter City striker Jamie Cureton paid tribute to his team-mates for their sterling defensive work after scoring the only goal of the game in the Grecians' 1-0 win at Bradford City on Saturday.

Cureton struck his 13th goal of the season just before half-time to give Exeter something to defend after the break and they did just that with a heroic backs-to-the-wall performance to earn three valuable npower League Two points.

"I take the headlines for the goals, but it was a really, really good team performance. That is as good as we have played away from home," Exeter's evergreen 37-year-old front man said.

"We defended from the front and I think the back boys were brilliant. The midfield played well and so did the goalkeeper and it is the sort of away performance that we like.

"You could see in the dressing room afterwards that the boys were proud of not only the forward play, but our defensive play as well because we were put under the cosh in the second half and we stood up to it.

"It was nice to get the goal and I thought I had one earlier, but it hit the post, which was disappointing. But it was nice to get the goal quite late on in the first half because we went into half-time positive.

"As the ball went over my head, I hoped someone was there and Matt [Oakley] said he looked at me and saw my eyes light up! I just wanted to get something on it and thankfully I hit it well and it has gone in again."

Cureton has scored half of the Grecians' 26 League goals this season, but his winning strike did not go down well in West Yorkshire. The former Norwich City and Bristol Rovers man came in for plenty of stick throughout the game from the home fans, who were left in no doubt as to who was Exeter's scorer when Cureton struck just before half-time.

"They went a bit crazy," Cureton added. "I got kicked in the corner and I was getting some stick, so I gave them a bit back. But it was in my head that, if I scored, I was going to give them some and obviously I did, so I ran over to them and reminded them who scored the goal!

"I was getting stick from every side of the ground from then on after, but I don't mind. The Exeter fans were great, they always support me. It is a long way to come and they have been great with us and it is nice to give them a performance like that.

"Every player enjoys winning and strikers enjoy scoring goals, so it is good. I have obviously been scoring since the start of the season and it has continued. Long may that continue."

The Grecians are in action again tomorrow night when they travel to league leaders Gillingham, who went seven points clear on Saturday with a last-minute 2-1 win over Morecambe at Priestfield.

"I won't be ding much until then," Cureton said with a wry smile. "You come off the back of this feeling great, but there are some bumps and bruises and everyone is tired. But we have to go again.

"It is another tough team to play, they have shown they are probably one of the best in the division and that is why they are where they are, but we have to try and put another performance in.

"If we want to be at the top of the table, then we have to beat the best and stand up to them. We will have a rest and get ready to go again."
