Support the effort to control arms trade
FOR the first time ever we have a treaty to regulate the global arms trade, and this is thanks to local people in your community who have been campaigning for ten years, to make sure that the world has a historic Arms Trade Treaty (ATT).
This treaty which was finally agreed on April 3, 2013, started off as an idea in 2003 by Oxfam, Amnesty International and IANSA (International Action Network on Small Arms). The Control Arms campaign was born, and since then campaigners in the local community have sent hundreds of emails and signed many petitions to call on governments to bring the arms trade under control.
The treaty is not perfect but the world has responded to mass strong public feeling. Now our governments must make sure that they sign the agreement in two months time. We only need 50 countries to sign to make it international law but the more states that sign up, the better.
For now though we can celebrate and reflect that the campaigning by local people here - has and does make a difference. If you campaign, you can make a difference - and win!
