SURFERS Against Sewage is calling for volunteers to help pick up litter at two of North Devon's most treasured beaches.

The organisation is heading for Saunton and Woolacombe on Saturday, November 17.

So far this autumn SAS has been joined by almost 500 volunteers and removed more than one tonne of marine litter from the coastline around the country.

Volunteers are asked to meet at the foot of Saunton slipway for the beach clean, which runs from 10.30am–12.30pm and at Woolacombe, by the stream, for its event from 1pm–3pm.

Hugo Tagholm, executive director of Surfers Against Sewage, said: "After the success of the North Devon Beach Clean Series in 2011, we are delighted to be working with The Crown Estate once again on the Autumn Beach Clean Series.

"Their support is helping us reach out to coastal communities across the UK to encourage people to get involved with protecting our precious beaches and marine environments from marine litter. "

There has been an alarming 100 per cent increase in the amount of man-made items washing up on the coastline over the last 20 years.

The majority of marine litter consists of plastic items such as drinks bottles, carrier bags, fishing line and sewage-related debris.

More than 100,000 marine mammals and turtles, and more than 1 million seabirds, die every year from ingestion of and entanglement in marine litter.
