Sutcliffe is first woman home in half marathon

ELLIE Sutcliffe was the first woman home at the first Exeter half marathon on Sunday.
The 13.1-mile race around Exeter Canal Basin saw 268 runners competing in the new three-lap event, held in addition to the annual Great West Run through the city centre in May.
Exmouth Harrier Sutcliffe was 18th overall in 1hr 24mins 29secs.
Other AVR finishers were: Chris Dupain was 33rd in 1:28.26, Emma Dupain 64th in 1:36.26, Ben White 96th in 1:39.01 and Trevor Cope 264th in 2:34.40.
A small team of Harriers travelled to Bovey Tracey for the latest race in the Brooks Westward Cross-Country League.
Jamie Palmer was the first Harrier to finish, clocking 38.14 for 28th place and second man over-40. Lee Russell was 96th in 53.15 and John Perratt 99th in 56.59.
Earlier this month Mark Thompson took part in the Moonlight Challenge in Kent, with competitors completing up to five laps of a 6.55-mile course.
Thompson covered the maximum distance of 32.75 miles in 5:07 and was second of the 32 runners who completed the five laps.
south west road runners
Tim Vialls led the contingent of nine South West Road Runners home at the inaugural Exeter half marathon.
Vialls finished 10th overall in 1:22.06. The club's first lady to finish was Amanda Perry, clocking 1:37.34 for 82nd place overall and first female over-45.
Other SWRR finishers were: Simon Tucker was 21st in 1:25.51, James Robson 43rd in 1:32.05, Jim Durston 48th in 1:33.17, Jonathan Major 79th in 1:37.12, Catherine Philp 88th in 1:38.18, Catherine Hilton 102nd in 1:39.42, Catherine Cannon 121st in 1:43.04 and Paul Madge 148th in 1:47.20.
Clare Hodgson was 11th in the women's race at the latest round of the Brooks Westward Cross-Country League at Bovey Tracey on Sunday in 21.41.
Other female SWRR finishers were: Mandy Wheeler was 20th overall and second over-35 in 22.09, Karen Cook 21st and second over-50 in 22.19, Isabelle Baraffe 24th and third over-45 in 22.45 and Caroline Gentry 35th in 24.07.
In the men's race, Chris Powell finished 51st in 41.50, John Kavanagh was 74th in 46.20 and Alister Ferguson was 90th in 51.14.
aXe valley runners
Luke Reed used the inaugural Exeter half marathon as a training run for the London marathon and finished 17th.
Reed completed the 13.1-mile route around the canal basin in 1:24.26.
Fellow AVR Sharon Rooke ran with friend Adele Foxwell and they finished joint 151st in 1:47.44, Pete Hughes was 165th in 1:50.46 and Dave Mutter 178th in 1:54.21.
Beth Sibley won the club's senior handicap race, an incredible achievement as she had won it twice recently. Myrtle Croad was second, Jacqui Stokes third, Rhea Lawrence fourth and Chris Driver fifth.
May Wood won the junior handicap in 16.18, followed by Ed Polley in 16.36 and Caitlin Bee in 17.01, with all three setting new personal bests. Mollie Hansford was fourth in 14.55 and Josh Coates fifth in 11.45.

Katherine Humphreys maintained her grip on overall first place in the women's section of the Brooks Westward Cross-Country League with a fourth-placed finish at Bovey Tracey.
Fellow Exeter Harrier Anna Rust was ninth and Emily Weeks was 16th.
Humphreys is just one point ahead of Plymouth's Ami Yetton in the series standings ahead of the final race of the series on March 18 at Central Park, Plymouth.
The club's senior men's team dropped to second place overall and will need a strong showing in the final fixture to beat Cornwall AC to the title.
James Denne maintained his consistent form to finish fourth in the race, holding on to second place overall.
Josh Trigwell was ninth, Dave Wilkinson 15th, Adam Stobbs 30th, Ollie Berry 35th and Peter Chamberlain was 59th.
Only two of the club's junior athletes took part, with Lily Helston fourth and Joe Chamberlain fifth in their respective under-15 races.

Nicki Ashworth completed the Exeter half marathon in 1:56.13, a week after finishing the Fulfords Five in 38.22.
Meanwhile in Florida, Nathan White completed the Miami beach 5k in 19.41.
