Swan forces lowered speed limit on M5 at Exeter
A lost swan was rescued from the M5 at Exeter today.
The bird is thought to have mistaken the grey asphalt for water and had hit an overhead cable and landed on the motorway, said a police spokesperson.

The fire service were called and the special rescue team from Exeter attended at 11:57am.
The team managed to secure the swan which had no injuries and the duty of care was left with the RSPCA.

It was spotted on the hard shoulder at 11:14am.
The speed limit on the motorway, between the A376 turn off at junction 30 and the A30 turn off at junction 31, has been lowered to 50mph.

“The speed limit has not been lowered - there is an advisory 50MPH shown on the matrix signs, but they are advisory only. Only on "managed motorways" with appropriate gantry signs with legally correct speed signs can the limit be altered.”
