Tablet users help drive record sales for John Lewis
John Lewis has reported record sales in the days before Christmas and a busy start to its sale.
The department store group – whose Exeter branch opened in October – said it expects to have a strong sale period, after its online clearance started with a record hour on Christmas Eve, with orders up 70 per cent on last year.

It follows a busier than ever pre-Christmas week for John Lewis. The week ending Saturday, December 22, saw sales of £157.8m, up 26.5 per cent on the same week last year and breaking the £150m barrier for the first time.
And on Christmas Day the retailer's website saw visitor numbers up by 24 per cent and sales surge by 40 per cent compared with last year.

On Christmas Eve the site saw 28 per cent of traffic coming from tablets. This number surged to 35 per cent on Christmas Day. The value of orders received from tablets has more than doubled since last year.
