Takeaway staff get stuck in to promote litter campaign
McDONALD'S franchisee Greg Fox and staff from four McDonald's restaurants in Torbay joined forces to assist the development of the Mincent Hill Wood area on the outskirts of Torquay.
The clean-up operation brought together members of the local community, encouraging them to take responsibility for keeping their neighbourhood vibrant and to take pride in their local environment.
Held in support of the Love Where You Live campaign, the team rolled up their sleeves and got stuck into helping the community project which will give young people something positive to do which will help increase their health, well-being and skills.
Mr Fox said: "Love Where You Live is an effective way of making a positive difference to the area. It was inspiring to see members of the community join forces to take action on litter which damages our environment. Unfortunately there are still a significant proportion of people who think it's acceptable to drop litter – it's everyone's responsibility and through these events we wanted to generate awareness of the issue, educate those people on how to dispose of rubbish properly and encourage them to be more responsible.
"I'd like to thank the staff, Torbay Council and the Devon and Cornwall Police Community Officers for their hard work and setting a good example of what can be achieved if people pull together.
"It's vital we all do our bit to support our community projects, everyone from local businesses like mine to the residents of Torbay should make a commitment to helping protect the local environment and positive initiatives."
Mr Fox's community event was just one of over 400 large-scale McDonald's clean-up events taking place to support the Love Where You Live campaign.
Aside from litter events and community projects, staff at every McDonald's restaurants patrol the streets at least three times a day to collect all litter which has been discarded, regardless of its origin.
McDonald's was also the first restaurant to introduce daily litter patrols.
Now in its second year, Keep Britain Tidy's anti-littering campaign, Love Where You Live, encourages the public to take action and help reduce the amount of litter in their local area and across England by 2020.
As a founding member of the campaign, McDonald's will offer ongoing support throughout 2012 by raising awareness of the anti-littering message through its 1,200 UK restaurants.
