Tar barrel pullers get a warm welcome at pubs
THE TAR Barrels went on their first outing on Saturday, when the '10 Pub Pull' took place.
Eager pullers set off from the Square in Hatherleigh at 10:30am to visit 10 pubs across the area.
These included ones at Iddesleigh, Winkleigh, North Tawton, Exbourne, Northlew, Bratton Clovelly, Halwill Junction, Black Torrington, and Highampton.
A warm welcome awaited them back at Hatherleigh, where there was a buffet and music at The George.
Team members were delighted that lots of people came to see them, especially at Bratton Clovelly where they had a particularly warm and generous reception from the locals.
They loved the sandwiches provided at Exbourne, and customers and pubs were very forthcoming with donations and encouragement.
Hatherleigh Carnival is only a couple of months away and the Tar Barrels are an essential and unique part of the carnival procession here in Hatherleigh of course.
It is good to know that the team has got in some practice at pulling the barrels and putting away the pints.
Hatherleigh Carnival Committee is still looking for entrants for this year's Carnival Prince and Princess selection.
If you are thinking about entering – even if you are a single prince or a single princess – the committee is happy to select the youngsters on their own if they can't get a partner to enter.
There is also help with costs. A grant is available to help with the cost of the float and the committee is always on hand to offer any help or advice.
Selections take place at The Island Party on September 14 at 6.30pm.The Island Park Party and Royalty Evening will also have duck racing, barbecue and live music from the Silver Band and lots more.
