Taser used in Melbourne Street stand-off
Police cordoned off Melbourne Street in Tiverton yesterday following concerns for the wellbeing of a man who had shut himself into an outbuilding where he had access to tools including a chainsaw and an axe.
Emergency calls were made at around 3.15pm following a report of a domestic disturbance at a property in Melbourne Street. Some neighbouring properties were evacuated while a cordon was set up.

A 32-year-old man was arrested under the Mental Health Act and returned to hospital in Bridgwater following a three-hour stand-off.
A dog unit and the police helicopter were mobilised and around a dozen police vehicles were sent to the scene, officers with taser guns were also on standby. There were two other people in the premises at the time of the incident, and police found a man refusing to come out of an outbuilding where he had access to several tools including sharp implements.

Officers negotiated with the man who came out of the building, but a confrontation occurred and officers used a taser gun. The man was arrested and was taken to hospital at Bridgwater. The other occupants of the property were uninjured.
A police spokesman said reassurance patrols were carried out in the area that evening by local officers.
