NEARLY £2,500 has been raised for North Devon District Hospital's Chemotherapy Appeal in memory of Vanessa Yates who died from leukaemia earlier this year.

Her colleagues at Tesco in Braunton raised £780 while donations at her funeral realised £1,700.

Vanessa travelled to Exeter or Bristol for treatment twice a week for nearly two years.

Her husband Dave, who also works at the Braunton store, said she was keen to see a new chemotherapy unit built in Barnstaple so future patients would not have to travel such distances.

Commenting on the store's fundraising, Dave said: "All the staff knew my wife and they've really got behind it.

"This is something my wife dearly wanted and it meant a lot to her knowing we were going to do this.

"It's going to be fantastic when we get the new unit. It will make so much difference to people in North Devon."

More than £1,000 has also been raised for the appeal after 12 hampers were raffled at North Devon District Hospital. They came in a variety of colours and sizes and contained a selection of food, drink, toiletries and more.

They were made up by Holly Conway, a receptionist at the chemotherapy unit, and included items donated by her friends and relatives.

The Chemotherapy Appeal currently stands at about £1.2million, more than halfway towards the target of £2.2million.
