Think about a career in care, says local care company
As National Careers Week kicks off in schools across the city between Monday 4th and Friday 8th March, Sunshine Care is encouraging people to think about the different paths that can be pursued and the longevity that a career in the care industry can bring.
Those still at school that are choosing their GCSE options can look at studying Health & Social Care which will give them an excellent start. But for those who are looking at a change of career later on in life, many care companies offer in house training programmes enabling people to gain recognised qualifications.
Director of Sunshine Care, Paul Constantine said, "For any care company the quality of the service its carers provide is its most important asset. But, like any job, there are certain people who could be more successful than others. For those that have excellent patience and compassion, and understand that the job involves helping people to lead a more fulfilling life, a career in care may be an excellent option."
An ever ageing population and a continually growing sector mean that prospects for care workers are extremely good at the moment.

With different care options evolving, being a care work does not simply mean working in a care home anymore, as Paul explains, "The varied care options that are now available mean that carers coming into the profession also have different career choices, which all have a different appeal. In addition to working in a residential care home there is now the opportunity to do domicillary care, where the carer visits the service user in their own home, hourly home care for those that need short visits and occasional assistance and 24 hour live in care, where the carer lives with the service user enabling them to remain in their own home with their treasured possessions."
Paul continued, "All these different options help with the longevity that a career in care can bring. But the knowledge and experience gained can also be the starting point to pursuing a career in nursing. Many of our former carers have chosen this route as a number of character traits needed for a job as a carer and a nurse are the same."
With the advancement of vocational learning at schools and more companies offering training in house, Sunshine Care is hoping that many people will use National Careers Week to look into pursuing a career in the care industry.
