A YOUNG driver has lost his driving licence after a member of the public spotted him driving erratically, followed him and called the police.

Thomas Lee, 21, was driving along the North Devon Link Road on September 29 when the member of the public alerted police.

On Friday North Devon Magistrates' Court heard how a police car then took over the pursuit and pulled Lee over on Old Bideford Road.

After telling police he had drunk two pints of lager he was breathalysed and arrested.

Lyndsey Baker, for the prosecution, told magistrates Lee was then blood tested after being taken to Barnstaple Police Station and found to have 104 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80.

Lee, who defended himself, took full responsibility for his actions. "I know it was dangerous," he said. "The car has been scrapped now and I've got a bike to get to work."

He said he'd lost his driving licence at a music festival and hadn't bothered applying for a replacement since he knew he would lose it once he appeared in court. He was fined £250 and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £15.
