Thousands to be probed in council tax crackdown
THOUSANDS of households could face council tax hikes as part of a clampdown on benefit cheats.
Cornwall Council has asked services giant Capita to review the rates paid by about 78,000 people in the county.
They will be probing everyone who currently receives a 25 per cent single person discount on their bill.
The council says the discounts cost £23.5million every year – and believes many are falsely claimed.

As well as appointing Capita, credit reference agency Equifax will be paid to provide data on individuals.
Fiona Ferguson, the council's portfolio holder for corporate resources, said: "This is a simple matter of fairness."
The council says it wants to ensure people who are entitled to the discount are claiming it.
But the local authority is "equally determined" to take action to identify people abusing the system.
