Todd appeals to public to remember war dead
EXETER historian Dr Todd Gray is urging as many people as possible to attend the Remembrance Sunday service at the City War Memorial in Northernhay Gardens.
Dr Gray said that when the memorial was unveiled on Northernhay in 1923 the Lord High Admiral said that there would come a day when there will no longer be soldiers from the war still alive to tell their stories. It was for that day, he said, that the monument, and all others, were being erected.
Dr Gray said: "With the death of Harry Patch, the last British First World War survivor, we are at that point.
"The city's Great War memorial was created so that future generations would know about the sacrifices men made on their behalf. In the years that have followed this monument and all others have evolved into memorials for all war and I would encourage any Exonian who has a few moments to show their respect."

A civic procession leaves the Guildhall at 10.30am and a short service will then take place at the memorial in Northernhay in time for 11am.
