Torbay Sports Awards finalists unveiled
THE shortlist for the 2013 Torbay Sports Awards is today being unveiled – with finalists from across the region's sporting scene.
Shortlisted nominees from the various categories are listed inside today, with the winners to be unveiled at the star-studded awards night on Thursday, November 7.
Judges sifted through a record number of entries for this year's awards, and had a heated afternoon of debate before coming up with their choice list of finalists.
Three new categories have been included in this year's awards, which was won overall last year by cycling supremo Ken Robertson.
Finalists this year include world champions and representatives of several national teams – as well as the unsung heroes of sport in the Bay.
International bowls siblings Sam and Sophie Tolchard go head-to-head in the Senior Sports Personality of the Year category, while Torquay United Indoor Bowling Club president John Evans is recognised in the Outstanding Contribution category.
There are several young boxers vying for the Junior Sports Personality award, after a great year in the ring for Bay fighters, together with tennis star Rebecca Ley and golfer Tom Simpson.
Athletes, a gymnast and a golfer are included in the inaugural Promising Young Athlete category.
Devon Sharks rugby league team have been recognised for their title-winning feats by being shortlisted in the Team of the Year category, together with TYGA Martial Arts' world championship-winning team.
Herald Cup winners Watcombe Wanderers have also been shortlisted for the team award together with U14 girls from Paignton Community and Sports Academy – showing the diversity of this year's awards!
Among other finalists are Parkour (free-running) coach Kyle Perkins, several entries for Paignton Rowing Club, and a trio of Special Olympics medal-winners.
Tickets are now available for the gala awards dinner at the Riviera International Centre in Torquay, which will include a speech by guest speaker Bob Wilson, entertainment and a three-course meal.
Six-time Olympian Mary King and former Torquay United skipper Chris Hargreaves are also taking part in an on-stage Q&A session as part of the evening.
The full list of finalists are listed in alphabetical order, so there are no clues to the eventual winners!
