Torbay youngsters launch radio station
Youngsters in South Devon have set up their own online radio station and will soon be broadcasting live.
Parkfield Xtreme Radio will be based at the Torbay Council run youth centre and will be on air every Wednesday evening from 7.30-9pm for a year from August 14. It will end with a live FM broadcast in May 2014.
Supported by the South Devon Community Interest Company, Sound Communities, the station has been funded by the National Lottery and will be presented by young people for young people within Torbay.
Young people already attending Parkfield have been recruited to the production team and Sound Communities has won further local funding to work with neighbouring young people attending the Acorn Centre, Totally Teenagers and Brixham’s The Edge.

Mitch Knight, director of Sound Communities, said: “The young production team have been making ‘as live’ shows for the last month. They started their training with a trip to Dartington’s Soundart Radio where they presented live.
“Young people involved in this project are telling us that it is unbelievable and fun. Everyone at Parkfield seems to have been energised by the station’s development – it’s fantastic.”
Councillor Ken Pritchard, Torbay Council’s executive lead for children, schools and families, added: “The main aim of this project is to support local young people – to raise their aspirations and increase their skills so they are more employable.
“Being involved in making radio shows is very creative and Parkfield Xtreme Radio gives young people involved the chance to learn new skills in production and live broadcasting in a fun, informal way.”
