Tottenham Hotspur were kept in check by an obdurate and skilful Lazio side in last night's UEFA Europa League Group J opener at White Hart Lane. Spurs put the ball in the Italian Serie A side's net three times, but to no avail as the match finished as a 0-0 draw. Clint Dempsey was wrongly deemed to be offside when he headed home from a Gareth Bale cross, Bale was offside when he set up Jermain Defoe for a close-range finish, and then Steven Caulker was penalised for a foul when he headed in Bale's corner. Alavaro Gonzalez hit the woodwork for Lazio before the break in a rare attacking threat from the visitors.
