Transport hit as rivers burst banks
FLOODING wrought havoc in the Crediton area when residents became stranded, roads were closed and rivers burst their banks.
Heavy rain caused massive disruption to the A3072 Crediton to Tiverton and the A377 was also blocked by floods between Mill Street and the junction with A396, Exeter, at the height of the storms on Wednesday and Thursday.
A number of residents were forced to call friends and family members as access to their own homes was not an option.
A motorist had to abandon their vehicle, leaving it part-submerged after becoming stuck in water at Downes Bridge.

Crediton Mayor, Councillor Frank Letch, said that while traffic into Crediton was slow moving on Thursday, people did managed to arrive in the town.
"You couldn't get in from the Exeter side of town on Wednesday, but most of the traffic problems came from the Bow area," he said.
Parish council members reported flooding on roads in the area, with difficulties for traffic at Bow Bridge.
But residents at Sandford escaped severe flooding because of a lucky coincidence.
Malcolm Vallance, clerk to Crediton Parish Council, said: "The last time we had flooding it was really bad. We normally have problems at Shute Stream but the council came and cleared out the leaves and debris on Monday afternoon."
Mr Vallance believes this work is the reason Sandford remained relatively flood free. He added: "We've been very lucky."
Lapford was badly affected by the floods with flooding reported at Lapford Mill House, waterlogged fields and water running to the railway line.
A row of cottages in the village were lucky to escape flooding as the water started to recede when it was just a few feet away from the homes.
Morchard Bishop reported heavy water in side lanes around the village as well as water-logged fields and a flooding on Morchard Road.
