A spokesman for Teignbridge Council said despite contact with the travellers, court proceedings were activated to try to get them to leave.

He said: "They were initially advised to leave by the end of Wednesday, January 9, and told that, if they did not move on, we would be taking further enforcement action. Court proceedings are now underway with a possession hearing due to be held yesterday."

The news comes as plans have been submitted to Teignbridge Council for 15 new permanent traveller's pitches at Haldon Hill, Kennford.

Applicant Teign Housing has put in the application for the caravan pitches including individual amenity buildings, community building and sewerage treatment plant and bin store at the Haldon Ridge site.

The pitches vary from 40 to 80 square metres to allow varying family sizes to be accommodated for.

Currently there is an 'unauthorised' travellers site at Haldon, adjacent to the proposed site. If permission is granted the new site will allow 15 households to continue to live at Haldon but on an authorised, managed and licensed site.

Those who live there will have to sign an agreement to lease a pitch, to pay rent and council tax and will answer to a site manager employed by Teign Housing. In 2004 Devon County Council unsuccessfully applied for a 15 plot transit site for travellers with amenity blocks and concrete bases.

In the proposed Teignbridge Local Plan it states that at least 70 pitches for gypsies and travellers will be provided between 2013 and 2033.
