A couple who died in a fire at their home this week have been described by their loved ones as people who "lived for their family".

Joan and Bob Rines, 76 and 61, from Filleigh near South Molton, were just days away from going away to their favourite place, France, on holiday when tragedy struck in the early hours of Monday.

The couple, who had been married for 35 years, leave behind Mr Rines's mother and father, brother Alan, five children, 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The couple's large family spoke lovingly of the duo, saying they did everything together. Mr Rines loved his football and was a huge Bristol City fan, while Mrs Rines loved her tennis.

The family said: "They were both the life and soul of the party. They were always at their happiest when they were giving and helping their family.

"If anyone said they needed something, the next thing you knew Joan would have already bought it because she was so kind. They were so in love and really happy."

One of the couple's favourite things to do was holiday with Mr Rines's parents, Bill and Joyce. The family said the couple had often talked about how much fun they would have staying up late playing cards.

Investigations are continuing into the cause of the fire.
