There's a lot of cricket to be played before August 8, but the Cornwall Premier League 50-50 Cup final on that date will be worth waiting for.

It will be contested by St Just – current league champions and holders of the Vinter and Edwards Cups – and form team St Austell, who are unbeaten so far this season following yesterday's 18-run victory at Plymouth in the national clubs competition .

St Just were made to work for the ten points they needed to qualify as West region champions when they beat Truro by 17 runs at Cape Cornwall Road. The match was marked by another terrific bowling performance from Truro skipper Tom Sharp who took four wickets in an over on his way to figures of five for 33 to help restrict the home side's potent batting line-up to 207 all out.

Sharp's county colleague David Roberts is in great form and top-scored for the home team with 85 from the front of the innings and with Neil Curnow (48) and Gavin Edwards (37) also going well, St Just looked to be cruising towards a big score on 152 for three after the loss of Gary Thomas for a duck.

However, Sharp then accounted for Nick and Mark George, Mark Harvey, Josh Semmens and Ryan Davies in quick succession as the league champions slumped to 159 for eight. But with Roberts playing a patient innings and hitting six fours and a six from 126 deliveries faced, St Just were able to post a defendable 207. Roberts was last man out, caught by Chris Phillips off a delivery from Alex Tunnadine (three for 46).

In the reply, Truro lost wickets regularly and were 38 for three at one stage after losing Chris Martin, Sharp and Tim Marrion cheaply and were 97 for five before Barry Purchase (70) spearheaded the fightback and brought his side to within touching distance of the target.

The innings closed on 190 with eight deliveries unused, Nick Carter looking good for his 18 before falling to Robert Clackworthy and Purchase last man out, a second victim for the St Just pacemen.

St Austell ended the qualifying stages in style and recorded their fourth consecutive victory with a 45-run success at Grampound Road. The visitors reached 202 for seven with Mike Bone undefeated on 75 after Matt Rowe (44) and Dan Jarman (24) gave them a good start.

In their reply Grampound were tied down by St Austell spinners David Neville and Andrew Libby, who took three wickets apiece. They were restricted to 157 for eight, Chris Roberts (55) and Tom Hughes (37) their principal scorers.

Penzance saved their best for last, scoring their first victory with a two-wicket win at Falmouth before following up in the national clubs competition with a nine-wicket victory over St Just.
