Ukip lead on the economy
"WE campaigned on every doorstep". These were the words of Nick Clegg following the Liberal Democrat success at Eastleigh. Indeed the LibDems are renowned for their success at local level.
It was a similar story for the runners-up and the notable success of the UK Independence Party which has contested every seat at local level in Eastleigh and engaged with many who had not voted for some time. Even so the rise of Ukip is being attributed to the protest vote and fears over immigration.
However, the real vote winner for Ukip will be once voters realise that Ukip economic policies are superior to the other major parties. While trade with EU countries would remain unchanged, new trading opportunities in a changing world economy would stimulate growth.
Yes to trade with the EU and to an expanding economy. But one not constricted by the Soviet-styled federalisation imposed by EU membership. This is the most important direction both for the social and economic regeneration of our country.

In the meantime it is vital that Ukip get their message across more fully. But this will not be maximised at local level unless Ukip Exeter properly contest all seats and with democratic candidate selection.
