University doesn't need to 'pretend'

PLYMOUTH Polytechnic reached a high enough standard to be granted a charter in 1986/7 and became the University of Plymouth.

A charter is generally accepted to be a university's birth certificate and that makes our Plymouth University 26 years or so old. It is doing well enough without trying to artificially improve its image. It is now trying to persuade itself and the world that it is 150 years old. It is adding on bits and pieces of time that other good quality, but not university-ranked, teaching units were operating, to its own time here. With careful selection it reached the figure it wanted.

I feel sorry for the students from Plymouth University whose fees have been spent on this exercise. Research ought to be about the search for the absolute, unquestionable truth, conducted with an open mind and in complete honesty. It should not be about manipulating figures to suit vanity or for deception purposes.
