VIDEO: Exeter Chiefs defeated in final pre-season game
Exeter Chiefs finished their pre-season campaign with a 29-26 defeat against Glasgow Warriors at Sandy Park.
The Devon club begin their Premiership season with a trip to Northampton Saints next weekend on the back of two victories and a loss against Scarlets, Bristol and Glasgow, respectively.
Chiefs’ latest outing was comparatively hard fought, but head coach Rob Baxter will expect a much-improved performance when league action begins on September 7.
The sides traded penalties in the first seven minutes; fly-half Gareth Steenson slotted two for the hosts with opposite number Scott Wight briefly levelling the scores in between them.
The Devon club’s defence came under serious pressure throughout the opening 40 minutes and the Scottish side scored the game’s opening try through Byron McGuigan.
However, Chiefs restored their lead through the boot of Steenson as the opening half reached its midpoint, but Glasgow ended the first half the stronger side, scoring a second try through McGuigan with Wight adding the conversion to establish a six-point lead at the break.
The situation grew worse for Chiefs at the start of the second half with centre Alex Dunbar extending the visitors’ lead with a try, converted by Wight.
Steenson added his fourth penalty, but Chiefs were finding it hard to break with the ball in hand.
That all changed briefly on the hour mark as Welsh wing Tom James cut straight through the Glasgow defence with a diagonal run to the posts from the left. Steenson added the conversion to reduce the deficit to three points.
However, their comeback came to nothing as Mark Bennett ran in yet another Glasgow score on the counter attack with Finn Russell converting.
Even a late second try from James, converted by Steenson, was not enough to prevent Chiefs falling from their first defeat of the summer
