VIDEO: Man admits claiming 53mph Alfa Romeo was being driven by Mexican
A MAN caught speeding at 53mph on 40mph Tavistock Road in Plymouth has admitted claiming his car was being driven by a Mexican.
Michael Tatem, 64 from Tavistock, appeared at Plymouth Crown Court today to admit perverting the course of justice.
At 2.10pm on January 25, 2012, Tatem’s car, a white Alfa Romeo Giulietta, was recorded travelling on Tavistock Road, Plymouth, at 53 mph in an area restricted to 40mph.
The offence was captured by a mobile speed detection unit.
As a result of receiving a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) / section 172 notice request for driver details, Tatem stated that he was not the driver of the vehicle at the time of the offence and falsely nominated a person allegedly residing in Mexico.
Tatem wrote back to say the car was being driven by a man called Carlos de la Vegas who lived at an address in Mexico.
He claimed he had met the man in London and let him drive his car twice.
Police investigations failed to track down a Mr de la Vegas in Mexico.
After a subsequent lengthy investigation the decision was made by the Safety Camera Unit’s Enquiry Officer to charge Tatem.
The offence carries a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment.
The case has been put off for sentencing.
