VIDEO: Old Plymouth ice cream factory hit by another fire
FIREFIGHTERS tackled a blaze at an old ice cream factory – which has become a favourite for arsonists.
The blaze at the derelict site in Bridwell Lane, Weston Mill, broke out shortly after 5pm yesterday.
Two crews from Camels Head went to the scene and quickly brought the flames under control.
Huge plumes of black smoke could be seen billowing in to the sky from as far away as the city centre.
The road around the area was briefly closed and surrounding cars were removed.
The factory is fast becoming a thorn in the side of firefighters as it is a well known favourite for fire bugs.
Earlier this month, The Herald reported that the site had been targeted four times in as many weeks during March this year.
Firefighters often have to ask residents to stay indoors and close their windows due to asbestos in the corroding roof.
They also have to send their protective clothing for specialised cleaning due to the cancer causing asbestos fibres contaminating them.
The former Fantasy Foods factory closed around five years ago.
The old building is due to be demolished and developed into 11 affordable homes.
