Over the past few months Western Morning News editor-at-large Martin Hesp has been looking back half a century at the coldest winter to strike the region in centuries.

The great blizzard of 1963 has been featured in numerous stories in the paper over the past few weeks - and Martin is one of the people who can remember just how bad conditions were when 20 foot snow-drifts blocked roads across Exmoor and West Somerset where he grew up.

However, in carrying out his researches Martin began to wonder where the real hard winters have all gone...

One place where he found a chilly answer was The Yukon in northern Canada.

Soon the WMN will be carrying a feature of Martin’s travels in the snow-wastes close to the Arctic Circle - but here he shares a short video he made while ‘mushing” in the footsteps of the old gold-rush prospectors on the Klondike.
