VIDEO: Plymouth Argyle 0 Wycombe Wanderers 3: Match report
ARGYLE could not come up with a third consecutive Home Park victory as they were heavily beaten by Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.
In what was a poor game from start to finish, the Pilgrims struggled to create any scoring chances against a well-drilled Wanderers' defence.
Wycombe took the lead in the 70th minute with a stunning long-range strike from midfielder Sam Wood.
They doubled their advantage three minutes later when striker Dean Morgan punished some sloppy defending to shoot home.
Argyle could not come up with any response as they continued to lack attacking inspiration.
Wycombe then put the seal on a miserable afternoon for the Pilgrims when midfielder Billy Knott scored a third goal deep into stoppage time.
Argyle's starting line-up was the same as for the 1-0 home win against Bristol Rovers the previous Saturday.
There were two changes among the substitutes with the return of Curtis Nelson and Paul Wotton to the squad.
Nelson was suspended for the victory over Rovers and Wotton had been sidelined for six weeks by broken ribs.
Wycombe, with three consecutive wins behind them, were still without former Argyle winger Paris Cowan-Hall.
He left Home Park in the summer but has been out of action for four weeks because of a knee ligament injury.
Argyle striker Reuben Reid headed against the Wycombe bar in the sixth minute after a cross from Rommy Boco but was also flagged offside.
That was the only goalmouth action in the first 10 minutes as both sides took time to settle.
Wycombe's Max Kretzschmar took a 25-yard free-kick which deflected out for a corner after a foul from Argyle captain Conor Hourihane.
Wood then fired wide for Wanderers in the 16th minute after a deep cross from right-back Marvin McCoy.
Centre-back Gary Doherty also headed over the bar from inside the six-yard box after a corner from midfielder Sam Wood as Wycombe had a good spell.
They could not capitalise on that, though, and play became scrappy and littered with fouls.
Argyle left-back Jamie Reckord blasted the ball far too high in the 32nd minute when Doherty headed clear a corner taken by midfielder Lewis Alessandra.
Kretzschmar then made a good turn inside the Pilgrims' penalty area but his weak shot was easily saved by Luke McCormick.
It stayed goal-less until half-time with Argyle struggling to retain possession for long enough to build up any pressure.
Wycombe 'keeper Matt Ingram did not have any goal attempts – shots or headers - to deal with.
Boco was moved inside, playing behind Reid in a 4-4-1-1 formation, at the start of the second half, with Marvin Morgan out on the left.
Reid had a tame header saved by Ingram in the 47th minute after a cross from Alessandra.
Argyle had more of the possession than Wycombe at the start of the second period but lacked the creativity to seriously trouble the visitors.
Boco did have one chance for the Pilgrims in the 62nd minute when he broke into the box but his shot was blocked by Leon Johnson.
There were some hopeful appeals for handball against Johnson but referee Simon Hooper was not having any of it.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 70th minute with a superb goal from Wood.
The Wycombe midfielder had plenty of time to line up a shot from 30 yards and he smashed it past McCormick and into the net.
Before play restarted, Argyle replaced Morgan with Andre Blackman on the left of midfield.
Andres Gurrieri was sent on for Hamza Bencherif soon afterwards, before Wycombe took a 2-0 lead in the 73rd minute.
Dean Morgan capitalised on defensive hesitancy as he latched onto a pass from substitute Matt McClure and poked the ball into the net.
Right-back Durrell Berry went close to scoring for Argyle with a fierce 25-yard shot in the 85th minute which flew narrowly wide of the near post.
Wycombe then rubbed salt into the Pilgrims' wounds in the fifth minute of stoppage time when Knott made it 3-0.
The Sunderland loan signing deftly chipped the ball over the onrushing McCormick after a pass from substitute Jo Kuffour.
