VIDEO: Police find Samurai sword after two-hour stand-off in Plymouth
POLICE found a Samurai sword at the scene of a two-hour stand-off this morning.
Officers were called to a house in Shaldon Crescent, West Park, at about 8.15am after a report of disorder.
On arrival an attempt was made to arrest a man who was uncooperative. He and a woman barricaded themselves in a bedroom at the property, police said.
Officers withdrew as there were concerns that the man may have had access to weapons.
As a precautionary measure the road was closed at both ends.
Officers negotiated with the man who eventually came down.
An arrest was made by police at around 10am and a Samurai sword was recovered at the scene.
A police spokesman said: “It is believed that he may have thrown the sword out of the window.”
A 23-year-old man was arrested for assault offences and a 17-year-old woman was also arrested for public order offences.
They are currently in custody at Crownhill police station and further enquiries are now being carried out.
Police were searching the house checking for any other weapons.
The police spokesman said: “This probably appeared quite dramatic to local residents but it was necessary to take these precautionary measures.
“We are pleased this incident was brought to a safe conclusion. Thankfully the man saw sense to come down of his own accord.
“Whenever we believe someone has access to weapons we must take extra precautions to protect officers and the public.”
Several police units had been seen at the scene, with eyewitnesses reporting seeing emergency services near the Freemans Convenience Store.
A police dog unit joined two squad cars there this morning.
Officers were searching a property as a PCSO stood guard outside.
