A BUILDER was woken up by a loud crashing noise and looked out of his bedroom window to see his dad's car crushed by a bus on Thursday morning.

Josh Squire, 23, was on the receiving end of the nasty shock after a Stagecoach bus was forced to swerve, hit a kerb and bounced up onto his dad's parked Audi estate.

The accident, which happened just after 7am on Thursday, took place at the bottom of Newport Road.

Josh, who plays rugby for Barnstaple, said the accident had happened after a BMW driver tried to overtake the bus while it was pulling out to pass the parked vehicle.

The driver was forced to swerve, he said, only for the bus to hit the kerb and bounce into the air, landing on the Audi and ploughing through the Squire's garden wall and gate.

"I was lying in bed," Josh explained, "when I heard a massive bang at the front of the house.

"I looked out of the window and saw the lamppost there shaking like hell so I went outside and I was shocked by what I saw.

"Our garden wall was in pieces across the yard and dad's car had been moved down the road. I looked down the road and there was a bus on top of the Audi.

"I've never seen anything like it."

Josh said he then went inside to tell his dad, Kevin, what had happened.

Kevin, 50, is director of rugby at Barnstaple Rugby Club and well known in sporting circles for his pitchside outbursts.

So when Josh rushed inside to tell Kevin what had happened he feared the worst.

"I expected a volcano to erupt," he said, "but to be honest he was very calm and just wanted to make sure everyone was all right."

Bus passenger Jo Osborne said the incident had been a bit of a blur. "It all happened so quickly," she said, "I was a bit shaken and it was a bit surreal.

"I remember getting out of the bus, looking at the car and thinking, "how did that happen".

"It was just such a shock, I'm normally half asleep at that time of day, until I've got to work and had a coffee.

"But the bus driver was brilliant, he made sure everyone was ok and helped everyone off the bus."

Neither the bus driver nor the BMW driver was injured, and all of the passengers on the bus were also unhurt.
