Ventilation system upgraded
A ventilation system in Derriford Hospital’s operating theatres has been upgraded.
The system is an essential but often unnoticed part of the hospital infrastructure and has received the improvements as part of the Plymouth Hospitals Trust’s plans to transform its buildings and facilities.
The £4.2million improvements are the culmination of a year and a half of intense activity in the main theatre suites at the hospital to ensure the ventilation system is fit for modern healthcare.
While undertaking the work, effort was made to ensure the environment remained completely safe for patients while delivering the best possible care.

Paul McArdle, assistant medical director and consultant maxillofacial surgeon, said: “This project has been delivered as a result of the hard work and support from staff, often moving working areas over the weekend to enable the work to progress smoothly. Without the support of our staff and the biggest Rubik Cube diagram of theatre reorganisation ever seen in the trust the work would not have progressed smoothly.
“The ventilation project has been completed while ensuring that our patients were put first at all times and that clinical needs were met. Changes and upgrades in the theatres which were not part of the original project plan were also completed during this project.”
