ORGANISERS of a junior badminton tournament have insisted the event will go ahead next year, despite the loss of its venue.

The Plymouth Junior Badminton tournament played its last competition for school children at the Mayflower Centre over the weekend.

Next year, the Mayflower will make way for the Life Centre, leaving the tournament with nowhere to go.

Tournament officials have thrown doubt over whether they can afford to stage the event in the Life Centre because of the cost involved.

But chairman Brian Megassick said: "There will be a tournament, but we're just not sure about the venue yet.

"The event has been held at the Mayflower Centre for more than 30 years and this was to be the last time it was held at this venue.

"Planning for next year's event will start soon and the committee will be looking at new venues to fit in with our tight budget.

"As this is the only junior badminton tournament in Plymouth, it is vital to keep it running."

The chairman said entry numbers were slightly down on previous years, but he said attempts would be made to promote the event more thoroughly next year.

Players were separated into four categories: under-11, under-14, under-16 and under-18.

Committee members said they were indebted to their sponsors and supporters DRD Trust and Hunts Tree Surgery.
