"The walking bus provides support for families for a variety of reasons. It provides a healthy start to the day, and as they walk children learn good road sense.

"It has proved so successful that we are planning to set up another 'bus' serving a different route to school early next year."

Road safety officer Bev Hannah said: "The concept of the walking bus was invented in Australia in 1992. They encourage physical activity by teaching children the skills to walk safely, how to identify safe routes to school, and the benefits of walking.

"They also help to reduce traffic congestion, pollution and speed near schools.

"We look forward to other schools contacting us to find out more about how to set up their own walking bus."
