The Land Society is launching a funding campaign to raise £20,000 towards building a demonstration affordable eco-home in Devon. Small financial donations made online are invited for this so-called "crowd-funding" project.

The innovative scheme aims to enable people living in rural communities to buy and build their own home. The money will help to complete the scheme's first self-build home, built in conjunction with South Devon College's Construction Department.

The Land Society says it is looking for "innovative ways to enable people to locate and build their own houses in their rural communities".

It is hoped that the self-build eco-homes, pictured, will make housing affordable in those communities where local people would otherwise have to move away.

It's anticipated that the three-bedroom detached houses will cost just £100,000, with a heating bill of under £100 a year.

The Land Society hopes that this project will allow families to self-build their own, affordable eco-homes, as part of a community self-build project.

To date, a total of £94,500 has been raised for the project.

Financial donations are being organised with Peoplefund.it in conjunction with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and River Cottage, based in Axminster, Devon. Organiser Nick Underhill says: "It's really exciting to work with such an innovative project that is helping to re-build communities, as well as teaching people to build their own affordable eco-homes."
