Watchdog poll guidance
LOCAL elections are taking place on May 2 and candidates planning to stand have been told by the Electoral Commission to make sure they know their responsibilities.
The commission, which acts as the independent elections and party finance watchdog, has published a range of guidance for candidates and agents on who is qualified to stand, their conduct during the election, complying with campaign spending restrictions, and acceptable donations.
"We want it to be as easy as possible for people to stand for election, including independent candidates and people who may never have stood before", says Victoria Fox, from the Commission.
"Voters need to trust those standing. That's why it is so important that candidates and their agents know the rules from the outset."
