Wind and brass theme as Dartington International Summer School ends
ALL good things come to an end, and Dartington International Summer School closes its doors again at the end of the week, after yet another highly successful season of courses, lectures and concerts.
The focus of week five is very much one of wind and brass, with performances by the Gallimaufry Ensemble, the final week's Brass Masterclass tutors.
However, it's the Heath String Quartet that opens proceedings with a recital in the Great Hall tomorrow at 7.45pm with music by Mozart, Tippett and Mendelssohn.
Sunday's main event at the same time features former-Jugoslav-born pianist Tamara Stefanovich in a fascinating mix of Bagatelles and Etudes, combining works by Rachmaninov, Beethoven, Bartok, Woolrich and Ligeti.

The Gallimaufry Ensemble gets Tuesday off to an early start with music by Hindemith, Gerhard, Woolrich and Janacek at 5.15pm, followed by a mainly-Chopin piano recital by Martino Tirimo at 7.45pm, both in the Great Hall.
On Wednesday, the Dartington Festival Orchestra, under the baton of Pierre-Andre Valade takes the middle evening slot, with Schönberg's Verklärte Nacht, Stravinsky's Firebird, and music by contemporary Italian composer Ivan Fedele – a cello and piano recital rounds the day off at 10pm.
Thursday opens with the Chamber Choir in music by Bruckner and Brahms, followed by an evening of Brass and Wind Band Music, culminating in a performance of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, in Elgar Howarth's exciting version for brass band.
This year's summer school closes next Friday at 7.45pm with a further collaboration between the Summer School Choir and the Dartington Festival Orchestra, under the baton of Garry Walker, in music by Haydn and Bartok, and finishing with Beethoven's Mass in C.
