There is no sign of Crediton’s injury woes easing as they battle for glory in the national cup.

The Blagdon side host Hayle on Saturday, with the winners at home in the next round against the side to emerge from the Gloucestershire/Somerset region.

But director of rugby Eddie Trick has revealed his side will be without four wingers – and two of them are expected to miss the rest of the campaign.

“Matt Shapland and Dale Palmer saw the physio last week and will be out for a few weeks now,” he said. “We’ve got Eddie Yeandle back and we’re hoping Paul Tearle and Mike Pearce will be able to play this weekend.

“From what you would say was our first-choice side, eight players were unavailable last Saturday. That’s been the story of our season since Christmas.

“The four wingers who have played this season are all injured, two of them probably for the rest of the season.

“Jake Weedon is going to have an operation on his knee and Vince Vhinyu has broken a bone in his back. He’s come up through our juniors and colts and was having a really good season.”

Crediton are only four games from the final at Twickenham and, after losing against Gloucestershire outfit Old Richians last season, Trick hopes his players can go at least one step further this term.

“Last year we were drawn away to Old Richians and lost but this is a bit of a carrot to dangle in front of the players,” he said.

Crediton were due to be at home to Pirates Amateurs last weekend but the game was postponed on Saturday morning as the pitch was frozen.

However, with a function at the club, the day was far from wasted.

Trick said: “We had them coming up from Penzance so we had to make a decision by 9.30am and at that stage the pitch was rock solid. By 2.30pm it was raining and the pitch was playable.

“It was a shame because we had a players reunion on Saturday with over 100 ex-players back at the club from all over the country, but the festivities continued and we did at least have two games on the big screen so it was not an entirely wasted day.”
