Police say a woman's body, believed to be aged in her 60s, was discovered by coastguards on foot patrol near a cove near Lynton at 3.15pm yesterday.
The search and rescue helicopter from RMB Chivenor was called into action but didn't lift after the body was found.
A police spokesman this morning said: "Undertakers are now recovering the body and will be taking her to the lifeboat station for the time being."
"Unfortunately tide times prevented her being recovered earlier."
Police were unable to confirm when formal identification will be carried out.
