THREE fire engines were called to a house fire near Bideford on Wednesday night after a woodburner set the roof alight.

Two engines from Bideford first attended the scene in Monkleigh at 6pm and then called for a further engine from Appledore.

The fire was in a single storey extension in two separate roof spaces which caused damage to 50 per cent of the roof space. The remainder of the building was affected by heat and smoke.

Eight breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets, one covering jet, one compressed air foam jet, two short extension ladders, one roof ladder, height equipment, a thermal imaging camera and small tools were used.
