Nautical knitters have helped transform a tree at Living Coasts in Torquay with scores of woollen sea creatures.

The rowan tree which stands on "Penguin Beach" has been swathed in wool and crochet-work up its trunk and along its branches and decorated with hand-made animals including whales, dolphins, sharks, octopus and fish.

Neil Thomas-Childs, volunteer co-ordinator at Paignton Zoo and Living Coasts, said: "A dozen volunteers knitted and crocheted animals and lengths of colour. We held drop-in sessions, I provided patterns, wool, biscuits and hot drinks and the volunteers did the rest.

"It has been a great way to cheer up a cold, grey month. We decided to yarn-bomb a tree to highlight the botanical side of the zoo.
