But work on a new £2.3 million project to alter and extend the school has been held up.
Now the school's 197 pupils have been told that the new term won't start until Monday.
Head teacher Mark Shaw said: "We do not feel that the school is ready to be occupied by the children.
"We are very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but, due to unforeseen circumstances, the school is just not yet ready."
The alterations to the school building centre on a modern-looking three-storey extension.
New classrooms, a larger hall, a community room, a reception area, toilets, and external works including new paths and a playground are also part of the work at Queensway, which was built in the 1970s.
The Government gave £1.8 million towards the cost of the scheme, with support from Torbay Council and £500,000 from the Diocese of Plymouth and the school's governing body.
