AFTER the Wyvern Open Shore Competition at Slapton earlier this month, committee members swept the beach at Slapton on the following day looking for any rubbish that might have been left by anglers fishing the competition.

Pleasingly, the three black bags of rubbish collected contained just a very small percentage which might have come from competitors? Most of the rubbish seemed to come from bits of net, old rusty cans, wood and small bits of plastic that had been washed in.

Just one fishing spot in the middle of the beach was a cause for concern and the division is trying to find out through its contacts who was fishing there. If the angler can be identified, the person involved, if found to be responsible, would be banned from fishing any more Wyvern events.

The division has reissued its 2008 'Take Five' poster, urging members to take five pieces of rubbish away with them...along with their own.

Some confirmed dates for the diary are: January 28 - Presentation Night for 2011 awards at the RBL, Alphington, Exeter. Speaker on the night will be David Mitchell from the AT, plus a free buffet; April 13: Informal Divisional Dinner - open to all;

September 8-9: Salcombe Two Day Open Boat Competition.

BRIXHAM'S junior members fished Berry Head to find a few fish. Ciaran Farley had dogfish to 2.4 and Shay Upham caught a three bearded rockling of 1.2.14.

Doug Mosedale and John Heather fished a wreck off Start point, John taking pollack to 15.12.14, Doug finding pout to 2.8.6

The club's flounder competition was won by Dave Fortune with a fish of 1.9.1.

The wrasse competition was also won by Dave Fortune with a fish of 4.11.7. Rob Marshall came second with a fish of 4.3.10 and he also came third with a fish of 3.5.

BAYWATER Anglers have a Social Fish and Teach-In at Babbacombe Pier on Friday, January 27, (6pm-9.30pm). High Tide is at 8.47pm (4.5m).

At this time of year, the pier offers plenty of opportunities for dogfish and whiting, with perhaps a few other species thrown in for good measure. Mackerel or squid strip are both good baits but it might not be a bad idea popping out a couple of peeler crabs or ragworms to see what comes up. You might be surprised - when we did this event two years ago, we had some small thornback rays on ragworm.

As for tackle, I would probably stick to a couple of bottom rods with running leger with a biggish bait on one and a double paternoster with smaller baits on the other.

PAIGNTON Sea Anglers competition results saw Tom Taylor win the senior boat section with a bull huss of 11-9-4 (105.26%). Second was Mike Johnson (LSD - 2-6-24) and third Keith Nathan (LSD - 1-15-3).

Senior shore winner was Nick Berry with a whiting of 2-7-5 (178.69%); second Matt Collinson (dab - 0-13-12); third Fran Dack (flounder - 2-1-9).

Junior boat winner was Nicole Allen (LSD - 2-1-4).

Fish caught outside the completion included: Jonah Fletcher - Whiting 1 lb 04 oz 12; Karl Bennet - Whiting 1 lb 08 oz 12; Keith Nathan - Whiting 2 lb 05 oz 12; John Case Pout Whiting 1 lb 06 oz 01.

JOHN ADEY won Sunday's competition for 24 anglers on Exmouth Seafront with a fine flounder of 2lb 9oz 12drms. Second was Rich Corston with another good fish of 2lb 9oz 4drms. Third was Ross Stewart with a flounder of 2lb 1oz.
