Young scientists test their skills at Plymouth City Museum

YOUNG scientists had the chance to test their skills and brave an up-close look at creepy-crawlies at Plymouth City Museum.

Half term events have been running all week at the city centre attraction.

The Interesting Insects workshop allowed families to view some of the museum's collection of more than 50,000 moths and butterflies and 30,000 beetles under microscopes. Children also created their own pinhole cameras and learnt how to develop the images.

"This workshop gets children to look at insects in a completely different way," said curator of natural history Jan Freedman.

The interactive events also gave children the chance to see some of the museum's natural history collections, on show in its permanent Explore Nature gallery.

The free events have been a "great way for families to learn more about nature over the half term break," added Jan.

More than 170 children of ages ranging from two to 13 have already attended the events this week.

There are spaces still available for tomorrow's Make and Take: On Safari event, where families can enjoy some fun jungle-themed crafts inspired by the galleries and collections.
