Ziggy out, but Stoke still know where the net is
STOKE Fleming were without prolific marksman Antony 'Ziggy' Matthews through suspension on Saturday, but still didn't find goals hard to come by.
Andy White's newly-promoted side made it two wins from two with a 6-1 thumping of Newton 66 at Stoke Fleming Green.
Matthews' regular strike partner Gary Aldous was on target along with Sam Bruckner, Sean Vale, Dan Ewings and debutant Leigh Phillips. An own goal completed the rout.
Stoke are now just one point behind early Division Two pacesetters Teignmouth Reserves after the latter were held to a 1-1 draw at Hookhills United, who were good value for their point.
After going 1-0 down in the 40th minute to a Shaun Bowden strike, the Teigns pulled level on the hour mark but were fortunate not to fall behind again 10 minutes later as Craig Downing saw his 18-yard effort smash back off the crossbar and Ross Bradley's follow-up flashed wide.
MAN-OF-THE-MATCH Ryan Connor bagged a brace as Liverton United Reserves thrashed Totnes & Dartington 3rds 6-1 to secure their first Division Three win of the season in style.
Owen Gilding, Callum Livingstone, Jason Hurford and Steve Ware also netted.
Buckland Athletic 3rds struggled to raise a side for their home game against Meadowbrook Athletic but still managed to win 4-1. Ben Cowling, Mark Feasby, Mark Collier and Nigel Holmes notched for the Bucks.
A Barney Robertson double wasn't enough for Dartmouth 3rds to take a share of the spoils from their match at Bovey Tracey Reserves as they lost 3-2.
DIVISION Four was the main place for goals — no less than 53 being scored in seven fixtures.
Twelve of them came at Stoodley Knowle, where Babbacombe Corries were held to a 6-6 draw by visitors Foxhole United.
There were also 6-5 wins for Abbotskerswell Reserves and Brixham Town.
Abbots overturned a 4-2 half-time deficit to snatch all three points from the grasp of Stoke Gabriel 3rds.
Substitute Mike Rohan was only on the pitch for the last four minutes but managed to grab the winning goal.
Fellow sub Andy Phelan — he came on midway through the first half — and Dom Ford bagged two apiece while Shaun Taylor was their other scorer.
Jamie Swindells (2) and Bobby Chancellor (2), Nathan Quant and an own goal eventually helped Brixham see off the challenge of Ilsington Villa.
After falling 4-1 behind, Ilsington managed to pull themselves level at 4-4 before their hearts were broken, goals from Chris Harper (2), Neil Pollard, Steve Bone and Ben Harper proving irrelevant in the end.
It was more clear-cut for Loddiswell Athletic Reserves — they hammered Stoke Fleming Reserves 6-0.
Adam Sherring was the tormenter-in-chief with a hat-trick, with Andy Edmonds, Paul Tucker (penalty) and Luke Bateman completing the rout.
BISHOPSTEIGNTON United bounced back from the previous week's 6-1 drubbing at the hands of South Brent Reserves as they overcame Babbacombe Corries Reserves 3-0 at Humber Park.
Seb Shaw, Olly Bycroft and Dave Chadwick got the goals in the Division Five clash.
Bishops keeper Phil Clark was inches away from getting his name on the scoresheet as well.
Clark's long punt up field from his own penalty area cannoned back off the Corries crossbar!
Chudleigh Athletic Reserves were convincing winners in the Tolchards Friday Night Football clash at Coach Road, Newton Abbot.
They swept aside their Newton United counterparts with a 5-0 victory.
The goals were shared between five players — Ben Tipper, Chris Bennett, Joe Wise, Matt Pate and Dave Lloyd.
SOUTH Devon League new boys Riviera United are off the mark in Division Six after they beat fellow newcomers Chelston 5-3.
Matt O'Shea (2), James Atkey, Brett Rotherow and Gavin Coysh netted for Riviera.
