All aboard as MP backs bid for cheaper energy bills

Households are being encouraged to join an innovative collective energy scheme promising to give them cheaper bills.

The Exeter Together scheme has been launched and is designed to bring people together to make huge savings on their energy bills.

The city is one of four communities in the country taking part in the UK Together scheme, which is hoped will help them reduce heating bills by at least £100.

A month-long campaign has been started by Exeter City Council, supported by Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw, in an effort to promote the scheme to thousands across the city. Councillor Rachel Sutton, lead councillor for sustainable development and transport, said: "We are really excited to have the scheme in Exeter as we are helping to make the benefits of collective buying power a reality.

"This is an enormous opportunity to get people switching to a better rate and we can't wait to tell people all about it during our tour of the city."

Hundreds of people climbed on board a promotional bus named 'Bill' to find out if they could make savings of up to 26% on their utility bills.

Councillor Sutton said: "Bill has been out in the community visiting places like Crealy, Wonford and Countess Wear. It has given local residents the chance to ask any questions they might have about the scheme and how it could save them money."

Ben Bradshaw joined Exeter Together's team of helpers to provide information about how to switch and save money during a community event at Wonford.

Mr Bradshaw said: "It was great to meet so many people interested in the scheme. Exeter Together could potentially help so many local people save money off their utility bills."

Clubs and organisations including Exeter City Football Club, Devon's Crealy and the Exeter Chiefs have given their backing the scheme.

Councillor Sutton added: "People are under no obligation to switch and it is clearly explained whether the end user is better to stay with their current provider, or whether they will benefit from a switching to the Exeter Together scheme."

UK Together has calculated that households could save an average of £220 on their energy bill by joining the initiative.

The scheme generated collective savings of £160,000 when it ran in Cornwall last year, with participants making savings of around £135 each.
